The option of surrogacy is usually chosen after you have exhausted all other attempts to achieve your dream of having a baby. A gestational surrogate is a woman who carries a pregnancy for any couple in which the female partner cannot carry the pregnancy by herself. In gestational surrogacy, the baby is conceived entirely by the intended parents: the biological mother's egg is fertilized with the biological father's sperm. The embryo is then placed into the uterus of the gestational surrogate and carried to birth. A gestational surrogate must be tested for communicable diseases and must not use tobacco, alcohol or illegal drugs. She must also have a normal and up-to-date pap smear. The intended parents and a gestational surrogate must be tested for the following communicable diseases: Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, HIV-1, HIV-2 since their embryos will be placed into the uterus of the gestational surrogate.
